Uche Ignites Dominant Palace Win at Shelbourne.
Despite entering their maiden European adventure, Crystal Palace are learning very quickly. Missing star figures like striker Jean-Philippe Mateta and defender Daniel Muñoz, the London club departed Dublin with a comfortable result that all but secures them a spot in the Conference League qualifying rounds.
A further three points in their upcoming fixture against Finland's KuPS ought to be sufficient to secure straight passage to the last 16, particularly following a prior stumble against Strasbourg.
Fringe Players Seize the Opportunity
This match provided a chance for several Palace's fringe talent to impress. Christantus Uche, making only his second beginning after joining on loan from Getafe, notched the scoring with a clinical finish. Forward Eddie Nketiah contributed a second, scoring for the second consecutive match.
The Shelbourne side that had concluded their league season were no match against a largely second-string Palace lineup. The Londoners were further depleted by the news that Mateta and Muñoz are out with leg problems.
Dominance Established from the Start
Despite heavy rain in Dublin, Palace rapidly established dominance. A flowing move in the 11th minute, sparked by Daichi Kamada's incisive pass, let Nketiah to set up Uche for a simple tap-in.
Midfielder Adam Wharton went close soon after, fizzing a powerful shot over the bar. Nketiah then appealed for a penalty after bursting into the box, but the official dismissed the appeals.
Ex-Arsenal striker didn't need to wait long to find his goal, tapping home from a yard out after Uche's shot had hit the post.
Shelbourne were clinging on desperately. Defender Kameron Ledwidge was fortunate to avoid a booking for a couple of agricultural challenges on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards rattled the crossbar with a powerful header from a corner.
Pino Seals the Game
The contest was as good as over eight minutes from half-time. Yeremy Pino weaved past some comically weak challenges before coolly slotting a shot past goalkeeper Wessel Speel to make it 3-0.
Following the break, manager Oliver Glasner seized the opportunity to rest several individuals like Kamada and Wharton. Replacement Romain Esse almost scoring his first touch, only to see his shot blocked.
The youngster was incredibly unlucky later on, seeing one shot crash off both posts before being gathered on the line. Uche then missed a glaring chance, showing there is still room for improvement in his game.
The only concern for Palace was a late injury to Justin Devenny, who limped off. This paved the way for 17-year-old striker Benji Casey to earn his first-team debut, capping an otherwise positive night for the visiting side.
