The Former President's Woke Alarm Overlooks The Continent's Real Danger: Economic Decline.

Donald Trump's security policy document presents a flawed assessment of the European Union. It claims that open-border policies and so-called "woke" agendas pose an existential threat to the continent's identity. However, this argument is based on a fundamental misreading of the reality. The true danger facing Europe is not cultural but technological and economic backwardness.

The Stark Growth Gap Separating the US and Europe

Statistics paint a stark contrast. Between 2008 and 2023, US GDP surged by eighty-seven percent, compared to a mere thirteen and a half percent growth for the European Union. Over this period, EU GDP per capita dropped from over three-quarters to just 50% of the US level. Remarkably, even the poorest US state now boasts a greater average income than major European economies like Italy and France.

Today, roughly 50% of the world’s top fifty technology firms are US-based, while a mere four are from Europe.

The Technological Shortfall: A Critical Problem

The growing economic gap is driven by stronger productivity growth in the US, largely due to technological innovation and better use of resources. The landscape of global tech dominance is overwhelmingly American. Over the past fifty years, 241 US firms have grown into companies valued at over ten billion dollars, versus just 14 in Europe.

This disparity prompts a vital issue: As the competition for tomorrow's sectors like semiconductors, AI, and fusion energy, where does Europe stand? Experts widely agree it is essentially a two-horse race involving the US and China, with European nations starting at a clear disadvantage.

Root Causes of the Continent's Technological Lag

A number of major reasons account for this technological divide.

  • Venture Capital: The US boasts a much more robust and agile system for financing new ventures. The EU still lacks a genuine capital markets union, which caps the scale of emerging companies.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Complex and divided regulation hamper Europe. A US startup can introduce a product under one regulatory framework to access a consumer base of over 330 million. The European Union, despite a bigger population, is divided among twenty-seven different national systems, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Attitudes toward entrepreneurial failure differ sharply. In parts of Europe, business failure was once met with penalties, whereas in the United States, it is often seen as a badge of experience.
  • Defense Spending: The US benefits from a deeply integrated innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. Europe's chronic underinvestment in military capabilities has weakened its capacity for breakthrough innovation.

A Path Forward: Reasons for Hopefulness

In spite of these hurdles, one can find causes for hope. European leaders are growing more conscious of the severe threat and have begun to advance substantial change. Key analyses on EU competitiveness and the single market highlight the need for sweeping changes.

Given appropriate incentives and regulatory reforms, these assets could support far greater levels of commercial innovation.

The continent still possesses significant strengths: skilled workforce, excellent schools and universities, and premier labs. Alongside a vast domestic consumer base and substantial household savings, these elements could unleash a new wave of venture creation.

Importantly, even if the EU does not take the lead in developing next-generation tech, it can still dramatically increase productivity by adopting and adapting innovations from elsewhere.

A Critical Juncture

Europe now faces a decisive crossroads. To paraphrase a famous line, decline often happens "slowly, then all at once". To date, the continent's technological decline has been steady. But, if it fails to take decisive action to tackle its structural weaknesses, today's gradual weakening could turn into a sudden and irreversible decline in world influence.
