Tetris Couldn't Succeed at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification Might Solve This

Each time a major awards ceremony approaches, there’s always an outcry to include fresh award types to acknowledge overlooked contributions and satisfy the passions of enthusiasts with niche passions.

Another commentator has already made for a horror game category. It would be amazing. So would board games, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward because like all single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification supporting my request remains most pressing above others. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Categorizing Game Types

Classifying creative works isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason cinema institutions don’t do it. But it is a necessary evil within the realm of video games, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.

Present Award Structure

The major gaming awards presently include genre categories for Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these classifications successfully include many game types, allowing placement for most games within them.

This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. What category would fit them between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.

The Representation Problem

Numerous examples exist excellent brain-teasers released every year lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging independent game categories.

  • An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked for anything that year
  • A different innovative game missed out in 2019
  • Popular arranging title was overlooked that year
  • Limited numbers of brain-teasers barely qualified for niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

Frequently they represent modest productions, however the design in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles stand as most engaged experiences globally maintaining this status for over a decade.

The legendary block-stacking game rivals famous sandbox experiences for the title of highest-selling title ever; it also contends for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. One could readily select five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these represent titles without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators operate at the demanding boundary of video game design, creating some of most fundamental forms of the video game form. Similar to film action specialists, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay generations.
