The one-time leader was sentenced of orchestrating a military coup in the ninth month and given more than a 27-year term in prison, but he was staying under home detention pending appeals.

Top Judicial Official Alexandre de Moraes said the decision to arrest the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after recent developments came to light.
